WHAT HAPPENED
Four minutes into my presentation, they cut me off.
In January 2022, after more than twenty years teaching elementary school in Waterloo Region, I registered to speak at a public school board meeting. I read aloud from two books available to children in our own school libraries and asked whether the sexual content in them was appropriate for the age group.
I never finished. The Board Chair accused me of violating the Human Rights Code and removed me from the meeting. Within days I was barred from my school, under investigation, and at the centre of a national media storm built on words I never said.
The Board took the meeting video down, so no one could hear what I had actually asked.
I sued. It took four years.
