Ontario Teacher Investigated Five Times for Criticizing Critical Race Theory in Schools
In February 2021, Ontario high school teacher Chanel Pfahl posted a comment in a private Facebook group for educators, expressing her concerns about incorporating critical race theory (CRT) into classroom instruction. She stated, “Kids aren’t in school to be indoctrinated with critical race theory,” and emphasized the importance of teachers modeling kindness and speaking out against all forms of discrimination, including those she believed could arise from current DEI methods such as CRT. Pfahl also shared a video of British Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch, who criticized CRT in UK schools, highlighting that in some places, teaching CRT without presenting opposing views is prohibited.
Chanel’s comments led to a complaint by a teacher in the group and an investigation by her school board, and later by the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT). After a nearly year-long inquiry and the involvement of The Democracy Fund, the OCT concluded. Since they could not find her guilty of misconduct, they issued a brief oral caution.
One month later, the OCT came after Chanel again, this time for posting about the board’s after-school “hangouts” online, which were segregated by race and sexual/gender identity. This investigation also resulted in an oral caution.
Because of Chanel’s commitment to exposing the ideological capture of the Ontario school system, the Ontario College of Teachers has continued to investigate Chanel. As of August 2025, the OCT is conducting its fifth investigation of Pfahl, who is being represented by The Democracy Fund, even though she is no longer working as a teacher.
Chanel Pfahl is an advocate for a return to classical liberal values and voices her opposition to CRT and gender ideology in schools through various platforms. She has collected numerous photos of bulletin boards and lessons children are exposed to in Canadian schools and posted them on X.
