Examination for Discovery Complete – That Was Rough

Examination for Discovery

That was rough - I'm glad it's over

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I’m writing to update you on an important milestone in my defamation lawsuit against the Waterloo Region District School Board and Scott Piatkowski.

We’ve just completed the Examination for Discovery phase of the lawsuit.  In simple terms, this is when both sides question each other under oath before trial. Both sides get to question the opposing party, with all testimony recorded by a court reporter. It’s a crucial step where evidence is revealed, facts are established, and both sides get a clearer picture of each other’s case.

My lawyer examined defendant Scott Piatkowski via Zoom on February 13, 2025. A week later, on February 20, I was examined by the Board’s lawyers for about five hours, also via Zoom. During the examinations, both sides made “undertakings” – promises to provide additional information or documents – which will be fulfilled over the next several weeks.

Even though my lawyer prepared me thoroughly for what to expect, I was anxious in the weeks leading up to my examination. There’s something uniquely stressful about being questioned under oath about events that were so painful.

The examination itself was emotionally draining. Having to revisit in detail the suffering I experienced in 2022 was more difficult than I had anticipated. Wounds that had begun to heal were reopened as I had to recount those dark days.

Despite the emotional toll, I believe I answered the Board’s questions effectively and didn’t fall into any of the “traps” that can occur during cross-examination. Of course, after it was over, I found myself replaying certain moments in my mind, thinking I could have answered some questions better – I suspect that’s a normal reaction.

With Discovery complete, we move closer to the next phases of the lawsuit. My lawyer will update me on the next steps once all undertakings have been completed.

I cannot express enough how grateful I am for your continued support. This journey would be impossible without you standing with me. Your belief in the importance of this case gives me strength on days when the process feels overwhelming.

I’ll continue to update you as significant developments occur.

With sincere appreciation,
Carolyn

I am so rooting for you Carolyn! I was following your case before my own firing as a high school teacher by the Limestone Board. As rough as that has been, my cancellation has not been on the public scale of yours with media exposure and defamation. I was fired for speaking out against critical race theory and gender ideology being taught to staff and students, to which teachers are expected to bow allegiance. I would not, and said so at staff meetings and PD workshops to my doom. I am sure your case will settle as you were clearly defamed, and I hope you are properly compensated. The problem remains, however, of children and young people being harmed by the very people entrusted to their daily care. It is tantamount to child abuse and those standing up for children are yanked out of the system. Worries me to no end.

      Hi Cindy,
Thanks for this post. Sorry it took me so long to reply. I am very sorry to hear what happened to you. Just today, my husband and I completed a new page on my website chronicling the abuse of educators who are merely fulfilling our duties to protect children. Here is the link: https://cancelledteacher.com/cancelled-educators/
I would be interested in chatting with you about your experience. I can be contacted at cancelledteacher.gmail.com

Thanks for your bold approach and going through this difficult time. I am a retired teacher as well. At met you Kitchener at the NCI testimony. I introduced myself and you gave me some links to get more information. FYI the link exposingsogi123.com does not work in its entirety. When I attempt to download the Toronto District School Board PDF the document is not available. It worked after I spoke with you in Kitchener, however I did not download it at that time. So if you can send me any pdfs about the book details, that would be great. Thanks so much for your courage.
